1 is one of those rare, gently uphill holes that has a lot of visible beauty and intrigue. Starting from the clubhouse patio, a royal carpet of bentgrass rolls out to #1 tees and continues unbroken through the teeing grounds to the landing area, connecting with the adjacent par 5 18th hole while also continuing up to and around #1 green, before finally ending at the blue and white tees for #2. This regal setting for #1 is made all the more dramatic by 20 foot high gallery mounding down the left side and an infinite vista of the northern horizon. Strategically, this is no throwaway opening hole, as tee shots hit left risk finding one of two steep-faced hollows, while balls hit right on both the drive and approach will catch bunkers or bound down the bentgrass slope toward #18. With #1, the mystery of the 'Highlands' reveals itself in grandeur and elegance, and emphatically announces that Chicago Highlands is a strong, fair, exciting, beautiful golf course!
